Introduction to Computer Systems (ICS)
Thursday, 07 June 2007

Description taken from CS website is:

The module is intended to introduce students new to computing to the basic concepts, principles and terminology of computing; for those with a computing background, it is largely revision, and a chance to help those with less background knowledge.

  • The first topic is Linux; lectures cover background and history, whilst students are expected to spend a significant amount of time becoming familiar with Linux, ready for modules such as POP and ADS. Practical groups, on-line tutorial material, and an email contact list are provided to help.
  • General introductions to computer science and engineering follow. This motivates the majority of subsequent modules, providing general definitions and concepts that pervade computer science and systems engineering, including opportunities to revise number bases.
  • The majority of the lectures address aspects of computer components. This gives a simple introduction to the elements that make up a computer architecture.
  • Finally, there is a brief introduction to programming at the architecture level, including addressing, machine code etc. This prepares for CAR, where real and hypothetical machines, their engineering and programming are persued in more depth.

Assessment:  By Closed Exam after Christmas (50 Marks)

Lecturer (when I took course):
